UPDATE: After this story was , East London Canada Day organizers announced they have cancelled their Canada Day event due to the expected heat. The East Lions Community Centre will remain open as a cooling centre.
Artists and performers set to take part in Canada Day events around London are making last-minute changes as extreme heat grips the area on Wednesday.
Environment Canada issued an orange-level warning for much of southwestern Ontario on Monday, indicating that a “long-duration heat event” will persist throughout the week.
On Canada Day, temperatures are predicted to hit a high of 34 C.
“We’re hoping for the best and that maybe some of the predictions for the weather are a little wrong,” said Hammerlock Wrestling owner, Shawn Bates, who is coordinating a live wrestling show at East London Canada Day.
This year marks the second time that 12 wrestlers will perform in a pop-up wrestling ring set up on East Lions Park field.
“We try not to put our canvas down until just before we need it since it’s black and attracts sunlight. We don’t want our talent getting burned while they’re taking falls,” Bates said.

Some wrestlers may also modify their match plans so they can stay safe in the heat, Bates mentioned.
“It might not involve too much physical activity. It could focus more on character work to engage with the crowd while ensuring their health isn’t at risk.”
A number of dance groups are lined up to perform at the London Heritage Council’s two-day Canada Day night market and festival, including Slavic Roots Dance Ensemble.
“We cannot change the weather. We must accept this and be ready,” said artistic director Vera Kinan.
Kinan explained that preparation for dealing with extreme heat begins a day ahead of their performance; she’s advising her dancers to stay home, limit physical activities, and eat well beforehand. She’s also reminding them to stay hydrated throughout performance day instead of drinking lots of water right before going on stage.
Despite these precautions, Kinan acknowledged that performing in hot conditions is tough-especially when wearing traditional Slavic dance costumes which are heavy and cover most of their bodies.

“We won’t change them. They’re part of our culture and essential for our show,” she stated. “We have to showcase our beautiful costumes.”

A dozen athletes from Aerial Addicts will also brave the sweltering temperatures on Wednesday.
“A lot of it is about pacing yourself when you’re in front of an audience. While it can be really exciting, you’ve got to keep your head clear and stay hydrated,” said Elevation Entertainment owner Kris Mac, who is overseeing the aerial act.
