The Kitchener Rangers are now champions of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) after defeating the Barrie Colts on Tuesday night with a score of 4-2 in front of a packed crowd at Sadlon Arena in Barrie.

This victory allowed the Rangers to complete a series sweep, finishing 4-0 against the Colts and earning their fifth Ross Robertson Cup title, which comes 18 years after their last win in 2008.

During Tuesday’s game, the teams were tied at 2-2 going into the third period, but right wing Christian Humphreys helped break that tie along with defenseman Carson Campbell.

Centre forward Sam O’Reilly then sealed the deal by scoring an empty-net goal. It was fitting as O’Reilly had received the Red Tilson Trophy earlier this month, awarded annually to the league’s most outstanding player.

The winning cup was presented to Rangers’ captain Cameron Reid by OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford.

“This is just amazing, words can’t really describe it,” Reid told OHL TV after the game.

“It’s a real surreal feeling to have all the guys to do it with and all the members of this organization. It’s incredible.”

Reid also took a moment to thank the fans who traveled to Barrie for support.

“This is Kitchener for you. They come wherever you go,” he said. “They’re amazing and we’re really happy.”

The team will now head over to Kelowna, B. C., for the Memorial Cup, where they’ll compete against winners from both the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League, including host team Kelowna Rockets.

Those matches are set to happen from May 22-31.
