The government of Ontario has finalized a deal with CN to buy land needed for the upcoming construction of a dedicated passenger rail line along the existing Metrolinx GO Transit Kitchener Line. This agreement marks an important step in Ontario’s initiative to establish fast, two-way, all-day GO Transit service between Kitchener and Toronto, according to officials from the Ontario government in a press release. The Kitchener extension project will create approximately 25 miles of new dedicated GO Transit tracks, along with signal enhancements, bridge improvements, and platform upgrades throughout the current corridor. Currently, Go Transit operates on CN tracks leading to Kitchener. Once the new dedicated GO tracks are completed along the Kitchener Line, Go Transit will be able to provide two-way service every day of the week between Union Station in Toronto and Bramalea, Mount Pleasant, and Kitchener. Meanwhile, Metrolinx has arranged with CN to boost passenger services on the existing Kitchener Line starting Nov. 23.
