After conducting searches in Kitchener and other areas of Ontario, the OPP have charged individuals involved in what they describe as a fraud operation that assigned stolen vehicles new vehicle identification numbers.

This was part of Project Tailwind, which started in March and led to search warrants being executed on May 5 in Kitchener, Brampton, and Maple.

Investigators claim that documents were obtained and misused to assign new VINs to stolen vehicles, allowing them to be legally registered, driven, and sold in Ontario.

The OPP reported that one of the four people arrested has a job at a privately operated Service Ontario location.

A 28-year-old from Vaughan is facing charges for breach of trust and trafficking property obtained through crime.

A 36-year-old man from Kitchener, along with two individuals from Brampton, were charged with offenses related to forged documents and trafficking property acquired by crime.

Police recovered six stolen vehicles and seized electronic devices during their investigation.

Service Ontario officials assisted with the inquiry.
