Five children lost their lives, and six others were hurt in a two-vehicle accident in rural Ontario on Friday night.

The Ontario Provincial Police reported that at about 7:30 p. m. in Mapleton Township, which is northwest of Guelph, a van carrying 10 people collided with a sport utility vehicle occupied by one person at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12.

Authorities indicated that five children – four girls and one boy – aged between 4 and 12 years old died in the incident. All victims were related, but police did not clarify how they were connected.

Additionally, four adults and one infant suffered serious injuries, while the driver of the SUV also had significant injuries.

At least three individuals were airlifted to various trauma centers, while others were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

OPP Superintendent Dwight Thib expressed gratitude to the “good samaritans” who assisted first responders, noting that the victims received “immediate care” at the scene.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford shared his condolences with “the families and loved ones of the children who were killed in the tragic collision that took place yesterday in Mapleton Township, and with those currently being cared for in hospital.”

“This heartbreaking loss is being felt across the community and the entire province,” he stated in a social media post shared Saturday afternoon. “Let’s all stand together with those who are grieving during this terrible time.”
