Officials are advising residents to minimize outdoor activities; some may experience irritation in the eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, or a mild cough.

Environment Canada has issued a yellow air quality alert for Kingston and nearby areas as wildfire smoke drifts into southern Ontario.

The warning, released Tuesday evening, indicates that smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario is anticipated to lead to poor air quality and decreased visibility starting overnight and continuing through Wednesday.

Officials are asking residents to limit their time outside and consider delaying outdoor sports, activities, and events while smoke levels remain high.

Individuals might experience irritation in the eyes, nose, and throat along with headaches or a mild cough. More serious symptoms like wheezing, chest pain, or a severe cough need medical attention.

Older adults, pregnant individuals, infants and young children, those with chronic health issues, and people working outdoors are seen as most vulnerable to the effects of wildfire smoke.

Residents are encouraged to keep windows and doors shut as much as possible, use high-quality air filters or portable air purifiers indoors, and wear a well-fitting N95 mask if they need to be outside for an extended period.
