A striking big top has set up outside Kingston’s Cataraqui Centre, but what awaits inside is far from your typical family circus.

Paranormal Cirque Nightmare kicks off its run in Kingston on Friday, blending circus acrobatics with elements of horror, theatrical performances, cabaret, dark humor, and engaging interactions for mature audiences.

The adventure begins even before attendees find their seats, as costumed characters wander the entrance, transforming the parking lot into an eerie realm.

“Paranormal is a mix of theatre, cabaret, horror and stuff,” explained Momi, an original cast member who has been part of the show since it started in Italy back in 2014.

The performance was developed by a team of artists seeking a darker twist on the classic circus format. Inside the tent, aerialists and acrobats share the stage with zombies, demons, and performers splattered with fake blood.

Actor Garpej Wrete (pronounced “Gar-pay Write”) has been touring with this production across Canada and the United States for four years. He mentioned that his costumes and characters are always evolving; his current appearance draws from burlesque styles mixed with grotesque visuals.

When asked how they juggle sensuality with horror in this production, Wrete provided an interesting take.

“It’s not a balance at all because we’ve got the sexiness at 60 per cent and the horror at 40 per cent,” he noted.

While there is a script guiding the show, Wrete added that much of how performers engage with guests depends on audience reactions. They might adapt their performances based on whether spectators enjoy the scares or throw them unexpected cues to work off of.

“It’s like you walk through a portal to a different point of reality,” Wrete remarked. “You’re not walking into your normal circus.”

This production is intended for guests aged 13 and over. Those between 13 and 17 need to be accompanied by an adult aged 21 or older. Organizers also caution that the show includes adult language, sexual humor, and content that may not be suitable for younger viewers.

A strong demand for tickets has already led organizers to extend its stay in Kingston by another weekend.

“One week is not going to be enough for Kingston,” Momi stated. “That’s why we’re going to go a little bit larger.”
