The OPP is reminding everyone to be careful when strangers invade personal space and to decline any unsolicited gifts or jewelry.
Ontario Provincial Police are alerting people in the East Region to remain vigilant following reports of distraction thefts occurring in nearby communities.
According to police, these incidents unfold rapidly and typically involve suspects who engage victims in conversation, display false kindness, or present gifts to divert attention before stealing valuables like jewelry.
Seniors are frequently targeted; however, anyone can fall victim to this scheme.
The OPP is urging the public to be wary when strangers come too close and to avoid accepting unexpected gifts or jewelry.
Residents are also encouraged to trust their instincts, remove themselves from uncomfortable situations, and keep their valuables secure while minimizing visible jewelry in public settings.
If you find yourself approached suspiciously or believe you’ve been a victim of theft, please contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
You can also report fraud or attempted scams online through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre for help.
