“Today’s announcement is a huge win for Metal Craft Marine Inc. and the City of Kingston,” said John Jordan, MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston in a news release on July 8. “This investment will support jobs and economic growth in the region, strengthen the company’s capacity to build advanced marine vessels and support national security.”

Ontario launched OSGP in 2025 with goals like ensuring shipbuilders have what they need-skills, resources, infrastructure-to thrive amid stiff competition while also contributing towards Canada’s maritime security. The grant doesn’t have to be paid back; it helps fund projects related to skills training, infrastructure upgrades, as well as machinery purchases within shipbuilding.

According to what was released , OSGP will be key for supporting federal initiatives like National Shipbuilding Strategy along with Ontario Defence Industrial Strategy while creating thousands of good-paying jobs within province’s marine sector.

Ted Hsu , MPP for Kingston and The Islands wrote advocating for Metalcraft Marine regarding how trade tariffs heavily impacted them as custom boat manufacturers. He mentioned on social media that he was glad about this investment received by Kingston company.

“As Canada and our allies work together , making record investments in defence and global security , Ontario is ready to build ships that will protect our country while keeping economy moving,” said Premier Doug Ford in a supplied statement.

“Our government is taking concrete steps towards building world-class shipbuilding sector here in Ontario since shipbuilders across province face unprecedented demand,” stated Prabmeet Sarkaria , Minister of Transportation. “Investments through OSGP will increase our capacity for shipbuilding , spur economic growth , plus enhance national security.”

Second round application intake for OSGP should open around late summer of 2026. Those who successfully apply for funding through OSGP will get notified via written communication from Ministry Transportation.
