The funding was revealed at the Sharbot Lake Family Health Team clinic on Tuesday as part of Ontario’s Primary Care Action Plan aimed at connecting every resident with a family doctor by 2029.

The funds will be managed by Maple Family Health Team located in Kingston. About one-third of this money will help expand services throughout Central and South Frontenac as well as Lennox & Addington County through Sharbot Lake Family Health Team, existing health hubs in Napanee, and Rural Kingston Family Health Organization operating in Verona, Newburgh, Tamworth and Sydenham.

The remaining funds will help connect more residents of Kingston with primary care services right within the city.

“We’re thrilled,” Dr. Kim Morrison, executive lead for Frontenac, Lennox & Addington Ontario Health Team (FLA-OHT), told the Whig-Standard during an interview on Wednesday.

Morrison mentioned that this $3.62 million will assist over 8,600 individuals who currently lack primary care access by linking them with doctors or nurse practitioners through support provided by Maple Family Health Team based in Kingston-a partner of FLA-OHT.

“The Maple Family Health Team is the backbone,” Morrison said. “They have the accountability agreement with Ontario Health and the Ministry of Health to allocate and be accountable for the funding that we’re getting.”

This money will create 27 new positions aimed at supporting existing primary care practices.

“Whether that’s data or information technology, or frontline providers like nurses or nurse practitioners, all those pieces come together to build a primary care team,” Morrison said. “It allows each practice to optimize its capacity and increase access, attachment, and efficiency in how providers work to get people the care they need by the right provider.”

However, this funding will also contribute towards opening a brand new inter-professional community hub in Kingston soon.

“In January, we opened Spruce Health Hub located on Days Road as part of round one funding,” Morrison shared. “With this funding we expect to open another hub yet unnamed.”

The space aims at hosting allied health providers nurse practitioners along with hopefully more family doctors.

“It’ll hopefully be somewhere we can recruit new family physicians into that team,” said Morrison. “

In a release concerning this funding , the province noted that over 87 percent of individuals who’ve been waiting for a family doctor since before January 2025 have been connected to primary care thus removed from its Health Care Connect waitlist.”
