The supervising coroner for Ontario’s East Region has announced a mandatory inquest into the death of a 22-year-old man who passed away after a stabbing incident and an encounter with Kingston Police back in 2019.

Dr. Armita Rahmani, regional supervising coroner, stated that the inquest will look into the details surrounding Evan Freeman’s death.

Freeman lost his life on September 12, 2019, after a violent event at Queen and Bagot streets in downtown Kingston.

At the time, reports indicated that Freeman fatally stabbed Christopher Barry, aged 40, and injured an elderly man of 82 during what police described as an unprovoked attack.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit previously reported that officers shot Freeman before he allegedly began stabbing himself in the throat. He was then hit by another officer’s conducted energy weapon.

Since Freeman died following a police interaction, an inquest into his death is required under the Coroners Act.

The upcoming inquest will give a jury the chance to review evidence about Freeman’s death and possibly make recommendations to help prevent similar situations from occurring again.

The Ministry of the Solicitor General mentioned that more information, including when and where the inquest will take place, will be shared later.
