Kingston, Ont., police are on the lookout for a witness after a large cube van crashed into a residential garage late Saturday night, setting off a series of chaotic events that left an officer injured the next day.

The initial crash happened around 11:40 p. m. Saturday near Bath Road and Coronation Boulevard. The driver of the van sustained unspecified injuries, but fortunately, no one inside the home was harmed. Investigators report that the van’s driver was picked up at the scene by someone in a white BMW, and police are trying to identify and talk to that person.

Police confirmed that the residence had no ties to either the vehicle or its driver aside from being where the accident took place. The home has since been returned to its owner.

Officers from the patrol division arrived to find that the van had caused significant damage to the residence.

While authorities are still investigating what caused the initial crash, things took a violent turn during the recovery process on Sunday afternoon.

<p At 1 p. m., police temporarily closed eastbound traffic on Bath Road to allow a tow truck to safely remove the van from the structure. During this time, a motorist approached and started arguing with an officer after being told they couldn't pass through.

The police reported that as they directed this driver to perform a U-turn, their frustration grew. While making this turn, they accelerated aggressively, lost control of their vehicle, and ended up striking an officer in the leg.

The driver was promptly arrested and charged with assaulting a peace officer. They were later released from custody with instructions for a future court date.

The involved officer did not suffer any lasting injuries, and traffic has since resumed normal flow. Police have yet to provide additional details regarding how the van initially impacted the home.
