Ontario’s police watchdog reported that divers have discovered one person in Lake Ontario after a vehicle entered the water on Tuesday evening.

In a press release, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which is handling the case, stated that the body of one individual was located inside the submerged vehicle. They have not yet revealed the identity of the person.

The SIU has taken over the investigation since the events leading to the vehicle ending up in the lake occurred during a police operation. This agency investigates police-related incidents when someone is seriously injured or killed while officers are present.

On April 21, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were trying to stop a vehicle around 10:55 p. m. on Bath Road in Lennox and Addington County, approximately 50 kilometres west of Kingston. At some point, the vehicle veered off into a ditch and subsequently into Lake Ontario, where it became submerged, according to officials.

For more than a day, search and rescue teams were looking for an “unknown” number of individuals in the lake. Consequently, sections of Highway 33 were closed at County Road 21.

The SIU indicated that they don’t anticipate recovering any more bodies from the lake. Police are currently on-site to assist with retrieving both the vehicle and the individual on Thursday.
