This existing setup allowed biologists to track where the goldfish traveled and when, without having to create a new tracking system from scratch. How the tracking revealed a seasonal pattern Eight of the tagged fish died during the project, but data gathered from eleven survivors was consistent enough to show a clear seasonal pattern. According to Boston, these fish spent their winters in the same areas year after year and returned to identical spawning habitats every spring. Only one fish deviated from this routine by leaving the harbour for about two weeks during winter 2018-2019 to explore open waters of Lake Ontario before coming back. That consistency proved significant for how these fish utilize the harbour. Goldfish favored the western end of the harbour during both winter and spring due to limited suitable spawning areas (shallow water abundant with aquatic plants) found elsewhere in the bay. They were also frequently detected at Grindstone Creek's mouth during their spawning period, showcasing high loyalty to particular spawning sites within their population. This is where things transition from intriguing animal behavior to a real management challenge. Hamilton Harbour has suffered extensive degradation due to years of industrial activities, and its goldfish population has surged recently-possibly filling an ecological gap left by dwindling common carp nearby. Why predictable fish are still hard to remove Knowing exactly when and where goldfish congregate might seem like it would simplify control efforts; it does help somewhat. A follow-up study published in the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences built directly on this tracking information to create a removal plan. It capitalized on predictable spring gatherings by conducting four targeted sampling events over one April, successfully capturing 642 adult goldfish from just one season alone. Those gatherings typically occurred in a small sheltered area where a major tributary flows into the harbour during evening hours-allowing crews greater precision compared with random netting attempts. However, while knowing where goldfish tend to gather aids catching those already present, it doesn't slow down how quickly they can be replaced by newcomers. Goldfish are aggressive feeders; they uproot aquatic plants as they search for food, and their rapid growth along with high reproduction rates leave few natural predators capable of controlling numbers once they've established themselves.
