WARNING: This story references and contains details of child sexual assault.

Daniel Senecal, a registered sex offender, has admitted guilt to several charges, including the sexual assault of a three-year-old girl in Welland, Ont., last year.

The 26-year-old entered his pleas on Tuesday in St. Catharines court to charges that include breaking and entering, aggravated sexual assault against someone under 16, sexual interference, choking during an assault, not following probation conditions, and possessing material related to child sexual abuse exploitation.

Senecal was taken into custody on Aug. 31, 2025, after police responded to a call regarding “medical assistance involving a child” at a home in Welland.

According to Niagara police at the time, officers noticed when they arrived that “the front door to the residence showed signs of having been forced open.”

The girl’s identity is protected by a publication ban.

Familiarity with the Family

Justice David Andrew Thomas opened Tuesday’s hearing by commenting on how many people were present; CBC Hamilton reported this from an audio recording of the court proceedings.

This case has sparked significant community anger along with calls for stricter penalties for sex offenders and changes within the criminal justice system throughout the Niagara Region. Supporters from far-right groups have participated in rallies demanding justice for the girl, which led police to caution against any “vigilante actions.”

Since then, reforms targeting Canada’s bail and sentencing policies have been enacted into law following royal assent earlier this month. Bill C-14, known as the Bail and Sentencing Reform Act, modifies various laws including the Criminal Code and Youth Criminal Justice Act to strengthen guidelines around bail and sentencing.

During Senecal’s hearing on Tuesday, an agreed statement of facts was presented in court.

Crown attorney Todd Morris explained that Senecal had been living in a basement apartment next door to where the toddler resided for several months.

Senechal shared accommodation with someone who babysat for her as well as being friends with her biological father who wasn’t living there at that time.About 200 people gathered outside the St. Catharines courthouse to call for change to the criminal justice system last fall. (Thomas Daigle/CBC)Morris mentioned that Senecal met the child’s mother while she was pregnant. He also stated that Senecal was known by the little girl who would greet him when they saw each other; he had even played with her and her sister before.

The night before August 31st , Senecal consumed alcohol and sometime between 3:00 AM and 3:30 AM ET broke into their home according to Morris.

Later that morning he was found arrested in his own backyard.

Morris detailed numerous serious injuries sustained by the child which were discovered by her mother early August 31st.

The girl received treatment at Mc Master Children’s Hospital where medical staff identified injuries consistent with forceful contact and strangulation.

Pervious Conviction Related To Child Sexual Assault

Senechal faced conviction back in 2024 for what Justice Janet Booy described as “violent” sexual assault against a 12-year-old boy occurring back in 2021. He served time behind bars but got released early March 2025. As part of his sentence he also joined National Sex Offender Registry lasting twenty years.

At this point Senechal still remained under probation during incidents occurring August

Previously Senechal faced accusations stemming from an alleged attack back in

In addition while damaging surveillance equipment using pellet gun he did face charge mischief same year later.

A date set forth regarding sentencing connected throughhearings could occur post late July if required. These sessions involve presenting evidence relating aggravating or mitigating circumstances disputed between both sides involved hence necessary guidance from judge.

While social media platforms have previously associated Senechal utilizing name “Dani Senecal” employing she/her pronouns throughout trial procedures including present week officials referred solely within courtroom context strictly towards Daniel Senechal utilizing male pronouns throughout proceedings.
