The Civic Holiday in Hamilton takes place on Monday, Aug. 3, 2026.

This holiday isn’t as formal as some other statutory holidays, but many people will get to enjoy a day off in the middle of summer. Unlike other long weekends, the Civic Holiday isn’t required by the federal or provincial governments. Still, it’s recognized across Canada with different names in various places. In Hamilton, it’s celebrated as “George Hamilton Day” to honor the city’s founder.

George Hamilton was born in Queenston Heights in 1788 and served during the War of 1812. After the Battle of Queenston Heights, he led a group of investors to purchase a large area of land. Following years of advocacy, the federal government established Hamilton as a town in 1816.

Hamilton himself played a significant role in shaping the city for many years. Although he faced criticism for potentially using his influence for personal benefit, he made notable contributions to downtown’s layout and areas like the Gore and courthouse vicinity. In 2010, city council officially dedicated the August long weekend to his memory.
