President Donald Trump is warning of a significant increase in tariffs on goods from Canada, intensifying a trade conflict between the United States and Canada following the breakdown of negotiations.
In a post on social media Monday, Trump stated that tariffs on all Canadian vehicles, automotive parts, and steel would rise to 50% starting January 1, 2027.
“Build in the U. S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS,” Trump wrote.
Trump claims that Canada has imposed high tariffs on American farmers and agricultural products, attributing what he calls a $60 billion trade deficit to the country.

“Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years,” Trump wrote, adding later, “WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!”
This threat from Trump comes just days after trade discussions between the U. S. and Canada fell apart. The U. S. then enacted 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, while Canada prepared to impose retaliatory tariffs beginning September 8.
United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer appeared unfazed by Canada’s response.
“The vast majority of goods that our small businesses trade in are made in the USA or they’re duty-free,” he told reporters on Monday. “So this is something where we don’t actually expect a huge impact.”
