Is July 1 a day for fireworks or moving boxes?
While some might argue it’s both, Quebec’s political parties shared their views on Wednesday about whether to celebrate Canada Day or Moving Day on social media.
Since many leases end on July 1, Quebec’s traditional moving day falls on the same day as the national holiday.
The Parti Québécois, which has promised to hold a separation referendum if it wins the upcoming October election, wasn’t surprising anyone with its focus on Moving Day greetings.
“This Moving Day, we’re practising packing our boxes before the big exit,” the party wrote online alongside an image of a box labeled “Quebec country.”
The Quebec Liberals stuck to their federalist stance and wished everyone a happy Canada Day.
The governing Coalition Avenir Québec, which has recognized Moving Day in previous years, chose to celebrate Canada Day this time around.
This past year, the CAQ had opted to honor Moving Day instead by posting images of cardboard boxes rather than the Canadian flag.
Former Premier François Legault, who led the CAQ until stepping down earlier this year, also marked Canada Day by describing it as a nation “that’s becoming a real confederation of autonomous states.”
Bonne fête à un Canada qui devienne une vraie confédération d’États autonomes!

On another note, Québec solidaire focused its message on housing rights and called for an end to renovictions.
The leader of the Quebec Conservative Party, Éric Duhaime, expressed his nationalist view. He considers himself primarily a Quebecer and desires more provincial autonomy. However, he acknowledged that staying part of Canada “comes with advantages: a larger and more varied economy that lets us have more of what we give; a more stable currency; and an international reputation that’s the envy of the world.”
Je vais toujours me considérer Québécois avant d’être Canadien.
Cela dit, tout le monde gagnerait à avoir un Québec plus fort, plus prospère et plus autonome dans un Canada plus uni.
