TORONTO – Wealthsimple’s latest offering has given casual economists and Canadians who believe they can predict weather patterns an opportunity to test their abilities, but some speculate that the company may be aiming for a much larger audience.

The Toronto-based financial services firm introduced prediction markets last month. This feature allows customers to place bets of $1 or less on various outcomes related to economic, financial, or climate events, such as what will occur at the Bank of Canada’s next interest rate announcement or how many significant Atlantic hurricanes will happen this year.

However, the initial weeks have led some to think that Wealthsimple might have even broader aspirations.

When Charles Martineau, an associate professor of finance at the University of Toronto, and Marius Zoican, the Canada Research Chair in financial technology, accessed Wealthsimple’s Predict app, they noticed it featured stakes on topics like who will become the next James Bond, future football game scores, and who will win the 2028 U. S. presidential election.

Canadian users can’t bet on those subjects yet because regulators in the country haven’t permitted prediction market trading for entertainment, sports, or politics. Additionally, topics can only be offered if their outcomes are at least 30 days away from being determined.

Selecting any of these subjects showed a note from Wealthsimple promising to alert users if trading becomes available.

“I think the message here is that prediction markets are here to stay, and though there are some temporary blackouts, don’t worry that the contracts you can trade on are quite boring because we are working on overcoming these barriers and making everything available in the future,” Zoican said.

Both he and Martineau believe that showcasing topics users can’t currently trade on indicates that Wealthsimple is trying to assess whether there’s enough consumer interest in expanding its budding prediction market offerings.

“They’ll try and gather as much data as they can so they can go back to regulators and push for changes,” Martineau predicted. “And that’s reasonable for them because if my goal was to grow Wealthsimple, that’s exactly what I would do.”

When asked if that’s part of their strategy, Wealthsimple spokesperson Victoria Belton stated via email that the prediction market product is still in its early phases and “for now” they’re concentrating on current markets. She mentioned that other topics are view-only so clients can keep track.

No matter what she also provided a whitepaper recently released by the company detailing how Wealthsimple envisions regulations surrounding prediction markets-including sports contracts-might function in Canada.

The Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO), which oversees investment dealers nationwide does not permit trading on entertainment-related predictions such as sports or political events.

In response to why it restricts prediction trading solely to economic forecasts along with climate matters and financial indicators CIRO spokesperson Kate Morris did not provide a clear explanation but mentioned they continue monitoring market developments for potential regulatory needs.

She declined further comment about whether Wealthsimple was violating regulations by including contracts that users cannot currently trade within Canada through its app.

Ilana Kelemen a spokesperson for another regulatory body-the Canadian Securities Administrators-also refrained from commenting specifically but advised “Canadians should steer clear of platforms or trades with dealers not complying with Canadian securities laws nor recognized by Canadian securities regulators as they pose serious risks since investors’ assets might not be properly protected.”

Securities regulators worldwide remain cautious regarding sports entertainment alongside politics-oriented prediction markets citing concerns about risk levels susceptibility towards insider trading suggesting better oversight should come from gambling authorities instead says Zoican.

Just south across borders where trading concerning Canada’s restricted themes isn’t merely allowed; it runs actively without restrictions.

A combination involving cryptocurrency reveals findings by Pew Research Center indicating between July 2024 until this past May sports-related transactions accounted together alongside political ones comprising 91% total global transaction volume processed via Kalshi-a platform partnered with Wealthsimple relating directly toward its predictive market operations.

During this same timeframe these areas collectively formed up 90% predictions made invested upon Polymarket-a platform deemed prohibited within Ontario owing primarily tied back towards securities regulation restrictions imposed earlier.

“Sports celebrity-driven occurrences moreover political happenings-they represent core foundations underpinning practices seen throughout Kalshi alongside Polymarket-that clearly illustrates where most activity originates,” noted Zoican emphasizing “Thus it’s logical deducing why one would anticipate seeing involvement surrounding such opportunities become pursued actively by wealth simple.”

Expanding upon offered predictions wouldn’t just serve purpose collecting fees arising from wagers placed; rather it opens avenues allowing growing financial service firms like wealth simple increasingly challenging existing traditional banks exploring chances fostering fresh clientele interested beyond just $1 investments too!

“Perhaps they’ll conclude reflecting saying hey-we’re not necessarily profiting outright via this move-but seizing potential prospects through engaging methods like utilizing predictive experiences ultimately translating leads transforming them later into real investors engaged with our flagship offerings,” opined Martineau concurring previously expressed thoughts!

“This could very well serve another method promoting overall growth aimed widening audience base transition turning them toward genuine participants leveraging all aspects offered inside wealthy simplicity operations!”
