Damascus, July 12 (SANA) The ambassadors from Canada and Turkey have expressed their support for the first session of Syria’s newly elected People’s Assembly, calling it a significant step in Syria’s political journey and a move toward regaining the people’s sovereignty.
Gregory Galligan, the Canadian Ambassador to Syria and Lebanon, noted that this inaugural session is a pivotal moment in Syria’s political evolution, highlighting the new responsibilities that the Assembly has to consider and enact vital legislation for all Syrians.
“Today’s inaugural session of Syria’s new People’s Assembly marks an important milestone in the country’s political transition. The Assembly now has the task of transparently debating and passing legislation to guide Syria’s transition in the interests of all Syrians,” Galligan said in a post on X.

Turkish Ambassador Nuh Yılmaz congratulated Syrian citizens on launching the People’s Assembly and holding its first meeting.
“Syria waited decades to restore the sovereignty of the people, paid with hundreds of thousands of lives, and hundreds of thousands spent their lives in prisons. Syria deserved this,” Yılmaz said in a post on X.

The first session of the Syrian People’s Assembly kicked off on Sunday with President Ahmad al-Sharaa present along with Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad, Chairman of Higher Committee for Assembly Elections, assembly members, and several ministers.
The members took their oaths and elected Abdul Hamid al-Awak as speaker, with Mustafa Moussa as first deputy speaker and Madonna Bishara as second deputy speaker.
