DUBLIN (AP) – Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney is making strides to shift focus from the United States and strengthen ties with Europe. On Saturday, he met with Ireland’s leader ahead of the G7 summit, emphasizing that middle power nations shouldn’t vie for America’s approval.
Carney pointed out that Canada and the European Union together have a population over twice that of the United States, alongside a comparably sized economy and a defense budget that’s double China’s.
He highlighted that smaller countries can amplify their influence by collaborating with allies who share their values.
“In a world of great power rivalry, middle powers have a choice – to compete for favor or to combine to create a third path with impact,” Carney stated at Trinity College in Dublin.
He echoed similar sentiments during his address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland earlier this year, where he called for a global rules-based order and denounced larger powers coercing smaller nations.
Earlier on Saturday, Carney met with Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin and French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday as part of his preparations for the Group of Seven summit set to kick off on Monday in France.
U. S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to head to the G7 summit right after hosting UFC events at the White House on Sunday for his 80th birthday.
According to a senior U. S. administration official, Trump currently does not plan any one-on-one discussions with Carney during the summit.
Carney described both Canada and Europe as a “force for good – because we safeguard the values of human rights, dignity and pluralism that our people hold dear.”
The prime minister mentioned that combined, the EU and Canada form one of the largest blocs globally in terms of economic strength, culture, technology, finance, and military capability.
“The new world order will be built starting with Europe,” Carney said during an earlier joint press conference with Martin. “Canada is the most European of non-European countries. We are transforming our cooperation with Europe.” p >
