Environment Canada has issued a winter weather warning for Hamilton, Burlington, Brantford, and the Niagara region.
In Hamilton and Burlington, the weather agency warns of heavy snowfall, with amounts nearing 10 centimetres expected along with reduced visibility, which should clear up by this afternoon. In Brantford, snowfall could reach as much as 20 centimetres.
For Niagara Falls and St. Catharines, only about five centimetres of snow is anticipated, but there will still be reduced visibility due to heavy snow and winds gusting up to 70 km/h.
The agency explains that the winter conditions are caused by an Alberta clipper that “will bring snow across the area which may be heavy at times beginning early this morning. The snow is expected to taper to scattered flurries or drizzle from southwest to northeast this afternoon. Lesser snowfall amounts are expected near the Lake Ontario shore where a transition to rain or rain-snow mix is anticipated.”
Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Ed Sanchuk advised drivers on social media app X early this morning, stating “if you are travelling, right now, on our highways, you need to slow down. We are responding to multiple crashes. 401, 402, 403 in various communities across southwestern Ontario.”
Sanchuk added if you “see snow. Go slow. It’s common sense.”
