When one opportunity ends, another begins-even if it’s just for a short time.

A Toronto-based company has recently revealed plans to temporarily occupy an empty retail space in a bustling Burlington mall and create a roller rink.

SUSO Skate Co., known for its pop-up roller rinks, turns vacant storefronts into lively community spots. Founded by the husband-and-wife duo Henry O’Brien and Janine Bartels in 2021, the venture began at The Bentway in Toronto and has since spread throughout the GTA, setting up in places like Bramalea City Centre, Oshawa Centre, Cambridge Centre, Promenade Shopping Centre, CF Shops at Don Mills, and Cloverdale Mall.

Oshawa Centre

SUSO recently announced that it will be establishing a rink at the old Decathlon store in Mapleview Shopping Centre (900 Maple Ave).

The French sporting goods chain Decathlon shut down all five of its locations in the GTA last year.

A SUSO pop-up currently at Oshawa Centre will wrap up soon, with the final skate happening on Jan. 25. Following that, the Mapleview location is set to open on Feb. 12; bookings are already available, O’Brien shared with Your City Within.

In an update on Feb. 10, O’Brien mentioned there’s a hold-up with obtaining a permit from the City of Burlington.

They “hope to open in the coming weeks,” O’Brien stated.

<p reminiscent of traditional roller rinks, these pop-ups feature bright lights and music to enhance the experience. There are themed nights such as Soca Saturday, Seventies Sunday, and Walkman Wednesday.

“Our mission is a simple one – get people active and having fun with friends and family while reducing the amount of time they spend on their digital devices,” SUSO states on their website.

To date, their pop-ups have attracted more than 100,000 skaters according to O’Brien.

He also mentioned that SUSO has introduced a mobile skate van that collaborates with BIAs and municipal recreation departments to provide free skate rentals to communities across southern Ontario.

The new pop-up in Burlington will operate Wednesday through Sunday with sessions for both kids and adults.

Adult admission including skate rental starts at $18; additional membership options are available for regular skaters. Skaters can also ask about private events.
