is looking into the deaths of two individuals found inside a Burlington, Ont., residence early Tuesday morning.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) announced in a news release that around 12:30 a. m., Halton Regional Police officers went to a home on Cornerstone Drive, near Dundas Street, after receiving several 911 calls reporting a disturbance.

SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette informed reporters at the scene that when officers arrived at the property, a 28-year-old man ran upstairs. When they located him, he had suffered a “self-inflicted injury, believed to have been caused by a knife.”

Denette mentioned that officers tried to arrest the man and provided life-saving measures before calling paramedics; however, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Halton police told that there was an interaction between officers and the man, which led to the SIU investigation.

“We have uncovered evidence of a conducted energy weapon, and we’re in the process of conducting interviews to determine how that was used,” Denette said.

“There was an attempted arrest made by this individual upstairs, and there was an interaction, some conversations and a struggle that ensued as well. As to the specifics of that, that is under investigation but that really is why the SIU is here investigating.”

A second man was also found deceased inside the home; meanwhile, a woman with non-serious injuries was taken to hospital. She has since been released from hospital, Denette confirmed.

Denette added she’s uncertain where exactly the 911 calls came from.

“There wasn’t anyone on the other line. I think there were some voices heard on the other line,” she stated.

“The call was put through as an unknown trouble … so I’m not sure they knew exactly what they were getting into when they arrived.”

The SIU characterized this incident as isolated.

A team of five SIU investigators along with two forensic officials are now examining the case and seeking witnesses throughout the neighborhood. Halton police are also carrying out a criminal investigation related to both deceased men and injured female.

The SIU looks into incidents involving police officers or special constables from Niagara Parks Commission or Legislative Protective Service peace officers that may result in death or serious injury or involve sexual assault or firearm discharge at someone.

The SIU is encouraging anyone who might have information about this investigation-including videos or photos-to reach out to their lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
