The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking into the deaths of two individuals found in a Burlington, Ont., home early Tuesday morning.

According to a news release from the SIU, Halton Regional Police officers were called to a residence on Cornerstone Drive, near Dundas Street, around 12:30 a. m. following several 911 calls reporting a disturbance.

SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette informed reporters at the scene that when police arrived, a 28-year-old man ran upstairs. Upon locating him, he had sustained a “self-inflicted injury, believed to have been caused by a knife.”

Denette mentioned that officers tried to arrest the man and provided life-saving measures before calling for paramedics; unfortunately, he died at the scene.

Halton police told that there was an interaction between officers and the man which led to the SIU investigation.

“We have uncovered evidence of a conducted energy weapon, and we’re in the process of conducting interviews to determine how that was used,” Denette stated.

“There was an attempted arrest made by this individual upstairs, and there was an interaction, some conversations and a struggle that ensued as well. As to the specifics of that, that is under investigation but that really is why the SIU is here investigating.”

A second man was also found dead in the house; meanwhile, a woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries. According to Denette, she has since been discharged from hospital.

Denette added she’s unsure where the 911 calls came from.

“There wasn’t anyone on the other line. I think there were some voices that were heard on the other line,” she explained.

“The call was put through as an unknown trouble … so I’m not sure they knew exactly what they were getting into when they arrived.”

The SIU described this incident as isolated.

A team of five SIU investigators along with two forensic officials are currently examining the situation and speaking with witnesses in the area. Halton police are also conducting their own criminal investigation regarding the other deceased man and injured woman.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police officers or special constables from various organizations if those events lead to death or serious injury or involve firearm discharges directed at individuals.

The SIU is encouraging anyone who may have information about this case, including video or photos, to reach out to the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
