A large police presence near the recreation centre and trails involved the Emergency Response Team, a canine unit, and a helicopter; authorities say there’s no danger to public safety.
On Wednesday afternoon, residents in Orillia’s west end noticed significant police activity as officers from the Orillia OPP, along with emergency responders and a helicopter, gathered around Barrie Road close to the recreation centre, trails, and nearby apartments.
Numerous police vehicles were parked along Barrie Road while officers searched the vicinity. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the OPP helicopter flying overhead for a long time while ground searches were happening below.
In a news release on Wednesday afternoon, Orillia OPP stated that they were engaged in a criminal investigation concerning an individual who is wanted.
“A large police presence on Barrie Road was conducting a search for a wanted male in connection with a criminal investigation,” police noted in their statement.
Authorities confirmed that they know the identity of the man but will not disclose it due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. As of late Wednesday afternoon, he had not been found during the search.
“There is no threat to public safety,” police asserted.
The investigation continues at this time.
