Authorities are searching for two suspects after a man was fatally shot in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Burlington, Ontario, on Monday night.

The victim has been named as Omer Niaz Muhammad, 24, from Burlington.

Const. Jeff Dillon, a spokesperson for Halton Regional Police, reported that officers were alerted to the shooting at Burlington Centre mall shortly after 10 p. m. ET.

Speaking with reporters at the scene Tuesday morning, Dillon stated that emergency medical services provided assistance to the victim.

“Unfortunately, upon transfer to hospital he was pronounced deceased,” Dillion said.

Suspects fled in SUV

Dillon noted that Muhammad was shot in his upper body.

He mentioned that investigators are looking for two suspects who escaped in a white SUV.

This incident marks Burlington’s first homicide of the year, according to Dillon.

Dillon added that authorities are unsure if Muhammad had any prior connection with the suspects.

“That’s going to be part of our investigation to see what the motive was, what any relationship was there,” he said.

Dillon also indicated that police “don’t believe there’s any known risk to public safety at this time.”

He said investigators will explore any possible links to other crimes that may have occurred in the area.
