Police are searching for two individuals after a man was killed in a shooting that took place in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Burlington, Ontario, on Monday night.

The victim has been identified as Omer Niaz Muhammad, 24, who lived in Burlington.

Const. Jeff Dillon, a representative for Halton Regional Police, stated that officers received reports of the shooting at Burlington Centre mall just after 10 p. m. ET.

While speaking with reporters at the scene on Tuesday morning, Dillon mentioned that emergency medical services provided aid to the victim.

“Unfortunately, upon transfer to hospital he was pronounced deceased,” Dillion said.

Suspects fled in SUV

Dillon reported that Muhammad sustained injuries to his upper body from gunfire.

The two suspects being pursued by investigators escaped in a white SUV.

This incident marks Burlington’s first homicide of the year, according to Dillon.

Dillon also mentioned that authorities do not yet know if Muhammad had any prior connection with the suspects.

“That’s going to be part of our investigation to see what the motive was, what any relationship was there,” he said.

Dillon further stated that police “don’t believe there’s any known risk to public safety at this time.”

He added that investigators would explore any possible links to other crimes occurring in the area.
