Burlington recorded the worst air quality in Canada on Monday when compared to other cities, according to the World Air Quality Index.
Toronto ranks second among major cities worldwide for the lowest air quality, just behind Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
This decline in air quality is attributed to smoke from wildfires affecting western Ontario, Manitoba, and the prairies.
This situation follows a summer filled with extreme heat and humidity throughout June and July, making it a challenging time for many residents.
Now people are facing a period where air quality may be unsafe enough to keep them confined indoors.
Environment Canada advises limiting outdoor activities, keeping windows closed as much as possible, and wearing masks while outside.
“From Windsor to Wawa, from Sarnia up to Ottawa – it’s really been under the same kind of hazy sky,” said Dave Phillips, a climatologist with Environment Canada.
The weather agency notes that mild symptoms might include throat irritation, eye discomfort, headaches, and slight coughing.
“The air quality issue is going to be with us for the rest of the summer, so we’re going to have to live with that,” said Phillips. “Now the winds do blow different directions, so it can clear up the smoke on one day and bring it back the next day.”
Health experts highlight that toxic chemicals in smoke contain tiny particles capable of entering lungs and bloodstream.
“So you may feel it in your nose, throat, or even eyes’ mucous membranes,” said Dr. Kevan Mehta, a Mc Master Pediatric Respirologist. “The small particles, when they go deep into the lungs, cause an inflammation response that causes difficulty breathing and connects with asthma and other lung diseases.”
More serious symptoms can include wheezing, chest pain, and severe coughing. It’s advised that anyone believing they are experiencing a medical emergency seek immediate help.
Experts also suggest avoiding smoke exposure by exercising indoors and planning indoor activities for families until children return to school.
