Authorities have initiated a criminal probe into allegations of fraud and breach of trust at a law firm in Mississauga, which is facing lawsuits and has seen some lawyers suspended.

According to INSAUGA Canada, RSG Law, established by former Liberal Brampton MP Rajvinder “Raj” Grewal, was included in a lawsuit filed by two Sikh temples seeking the return of over $13 million in loans.

The lawsuit emerged after Grewal’s suspension by the Law Society of Ontario amid accusations of fraud and potential misuse of trust funds linked to the former MP.

Another lawyer from RSG Law, Davinder Singh Khattra, has also been suspended due to similar claims.

Peel Regional Police disclosed that they began their fraud investigation in July, focusing on “the conduct of lawyers operating under RSG Law.”

“Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who believes they may have suffered a financial loss or may have information relevant to the investigation,” Peel police stated in a release on Friday.

Grewal served as the MP for Brampton East from 2015 until 2019 but resigned in 2018 after being accused of leveraging his position to solicit millions in loans to pay off gambling debts. He left the Liberal party that same year when details about his gambling issues became public.

He was found not guilty on two counts of breach of trust after prosecutors alleged he offered assistance with visas or privileged access to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in exchange for financial support from friends and businesspeople within his constituency. Grewal subsequently filed a lawsuit seeking damages from both the RCMP and Ontario’s attorney general.

A recent lawsuit submitted in Ontario Superior Court by private lenders SSMT Management Inc. and Oculus Mortgage GP Inc. claims that two Sikh temples together secured financing that ultimately increased to $15 million. Grewal is mentioned as a guarantor in this case.

The claim states that these loans were intended to be secured against both temple properties. However, the lenders argue that no charge securing the loan was recorded against the Brampton property despite an agreement made by lawyer Davinder Khattra from RSG Law, which was founded by Grewal.

The lenders contend that approximately $12 million of the agreed financing was actually provided, leaving more than $13 million outstanding, including interest owed.

No allegations made in this recent civil lawsuit or any broader claims currently being considered by courts or the Law Society Tribunal should be viewed as confirmed wrongdoing until proven otherwise.

If you have any information regarding these allegations, please reach out to Peel Regional Police at 905-453-2121 ext. 3335. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or via www. peelcrimestoppers. ca.

When contacting Crime Stoppers, you can remain anonymous, won’t need to testify, and could potentially earn a reward up to $2,000.
