A man from Brampton, Ontario, has received a 20-year sentence in a U. S. federal prison for heading a criminal group that trafficked drugs valued at up to $17 million US into Canada.

Guramrit Sidhu, 63, was sentenced on Thursday by U. S. District Judge John A. Kronstadt, as reported by the U. S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

In a press release on Thursday, the U. S. Attorney’s Office stated that Sidhu pleaded guilty in March to one count of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise. He has been under U. S. custody since 2024.

The plea agreement reveals that Sidhu led an organization involved in trafficking methamphetamine and cocaine using long-haul transport trucks from the U. S. into Canada between September 2020 and February 2023 for distribution purposes.

Within just over a month, from Sept. 13, 2022, to Oct. 24, 2022, Sidhu managed the distribution of eight drug shipments totaling around 523 kilograms of methamphetamine and 347 kilograms of cocaine, all seized by U. S. authorities according to the agreement.

The wholesale value of these drug shipments is estimated at about $15 million to $17 million, as mentioned in the news release.

After purchasing the drugs in bulk within the U. S., Sidhu organized their transportation into Canada via transport trucks for further distribution, according to the release.

He provided phone numbers and serial numbers on currency bills as identifiers for couriers during drug delivery and transport.

The plea agreement indicates that Sidhu and his co-conspirators later collected the methamphetamine and cocaine from various locations across Canada for distribution.

Sidhu marks the eighth individual to plead guilty in this case. Others have also admitted guilt regarding criminal charges and received federal prison sentences ranging from more than two years up to nine years.
