Ontario’s Crown Royal Ban May Impact Local Glass Firm

Reports say that Premier Doug Ford’s plan to ban Crown Royal whiskey from Ontario stores might affect employees at a glass company in Brampton that produces bottles for the Canadian brand.

This week, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew urged Ford to reconsider the boycott of Crown Royal whiskey after its parent company, Diageo, announced it would close its bottling facility in Amherstburg, Ont.

The closure will impact around 200 jobs, and Kinew is calling on Ford to rethink the ban since about 75 workers are employed at a plant in Manitoba where the whiskey is produced.

The announcement about the closure comes during a growing trade conflict between Canada and the U. S.

While the Manitoba government feels confident that Diageo will stay in Gimli long-term, another Canadian business could find itself caught up in this dispute between Ford and Diageo.

According to reports, O-I Brampton manufactures glass bottles for Crown Royal and other Diageo products. O-I Canada Corp. operates a glass manufacturing plant in Brampton along with another one in Montreal, employing around 700 people across Canada.

Ford mentioned he isn’t worried about how a Crown Royal ban would affect workers in Brampton and encouraged Diageo to find ways to replace jobs lost due to the Amherstburg closure, as reported by CTV.

O-I Brampton did not reply when asked for comments by publication time.

Kinew even invited Ford to join him at a hockey game this Saturday between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets in Manitoba’s capital.

If Ontario goes ahead with the boycott, Kinew said he has no plans to remove Ontario liquor from shelves in Manitoba as retaliation. He believes it wouldn’t be fair to take actions that hurt Canadian jobs.

“Crown Royal should have thought twice before closing their plant here,” Ford said this week after Kinew called for a pause on the ban.
