A man from British Columbia is being brought to Ontario after authorities say he was involved in a shooting linked to extortion north of Brampton last year.
The shooting took place around 3 a. m. on October 26, outside a home on Old School Road in Caledon, according to the OPP.
This incident marked at least the second shooting in Caledon that month, and police believe it was connected to an ongoing extortion case.
Officers from the OPP traveled to B. C. on Friday and took into custody Ravinder Singh, 23, who now faces two charges of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.
Authorities report that he is being transported back to Ontario for a scheduled appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on Saturday.
Sikh and South Asian Canadians have increasingly been targets of extortion over recent years, some incidents resulting in violence and shootings. The number of extortion-related crimes in Peel Region has surged since 2020.
While many cases have occurred in large population centers, the Caledon and Dufferin OPP detachments noted in February there were over 50 active extortion investigations, along with another 10 reported incidents in the Norfolk, Brant, Middlesex, and Wellington regions.
Anyone with information about this investigation-especially surveillance or dashcam footage-is encouraged to reach out to Caledon OPP at 1-888-310-1122. You can also provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting www. ontariocrimestoppers. ca.
By contacting Crime Stoppers, you can remain anonymous, won’t need to testify, and might be eligible for a $2,000 reward.
