The City of Barrie is seeking input from the public on plans to redesign Minet’s Point Park as part of its early planning efforts for a significant waterfront redevelopment, in line with the city’s long-term vision for Kempenfelt Bay.

Input gathered over the next few weeks will help shape the preferred design for the park and aid in future detailed design and construction phases, according to city officials.

The aims of the upcoming Minet’s Point Park redevelopment include:

improving access to the water enhancing environmental features improving connection to the surrounding neighbourhood

Three separate but coordinated projects are either underway or planned for the Minet’s Point Park area, aimed at upgrading infrastructure and refreshing public spaces. These projects include:

This initiative is part of the 2023 Waterfront Strategic Plan, which serves as a 10-year guide designed to boost public access, environmental health, and recreational options along Barrie’s waterfront. Specifically for Minet’s Point Park, redevelopment efforts will focus on enhancing water access, improving natural features, and strengthening links between the park and nearby neighborhoods.

Efforts will also be synchronized with adjacent infrastructure projects such as upgrades to the Whiskey Creek culvert and channel, along with future renovations of the Minet’s Point pump station.

Two initial design concepts are available for feedback, and an online survey is open until June 28. Participants can also enter for a chance to win a prize.

The first design draws inspiration from how the bay meets the shoreline at Minet’s Point Park. The flowing paving reflects the gentle motion of water meeting land. In the center of the park, a shade pavilion offers a vibrant gathering spot with clear views of the waterfront while a nearby public restroom ensures visitor comfort.

A wider wooden seating edge surrounds play areas, providing caregivers with a cozy spot to supervise children while creating an enjoyable area to relax and take in views of the bay. A pedestrian gravel path runs alongside revitalized Whiskey Creek with integrated seating opportunities along its route.

The second design highlights a strong link to the bay through a linear layout that naturally guides visitors toward water’s edge. A line of trees along parking areas welcomes guests into an open landscape. Simple materials, landscaping elements, and filtered light create a peaceful gathering space. Extending toward shorelines is an elongated shade pavilion offering relief from sun exposure paired conveniently with restroom facilities.

Timber features throughout sandy beach areas provide spots to sit or gather before heading out onto the water while a winding gravel path follows alongside revitalized Whiskey Creek featuring seating nooks where visitors can pause and enjoy their tranquil surroundings.

The concepts and survey can be found at Building Barrie. ca/Minets Point Park Engagement.
