Police are continuing their investigation into the death of a 10-year-old boy in Barrie, as neighbors respond to the shocking incident that occurred on New Year’s Eve.

According to Barrie Police, they received a call for a wellness check at a residence on Bayview Avenue near Little Avenue around 3 p. m. on Wednesday and discovered the child deceased inside the home.

The police declined ’s request for further comment on Thursday.

“At 11:30 last night, the body bag came out, unfortunately, we saw that,” said Paul Carey, who lives in the area, when speaking to on Thursday.

Carey noticed a police car parked outside his neighbor’s house Wednesday evening and watched as officers forced their way inside.

“They found the son deceased,” he explained. “The mother came out in an ambulance; she didn’t look very good but she was still alive,” Carey mentioned, adding that she appeared “out of it” while paramedics assisted her.

The Barrie Police reported that the mother was taken to the hospital where she remains. No updates were provided regarding her condition on Thursday.

Carey described both the single mother and her son as “a loving family.” He noted that the boy lived with autism.

“Very nice kid,” he added. “And she (the mother) seemed like a really, really nice person.”

“It’s been unbelievable and I feel horrible for the family,” Carey stated.

An additional neighbor, Gail Barber, told that she and her family spoke with the mother “every day.”

She described the young boy as “a sweetie, a doll.”

“He was funny; he would play in the snow and he was just goofy-a typical little boy,” she said.

“He was a lot of fun; I made him chocolate chip cookies. I was his favorite.”

Barber shared with that she had attended church with the child’s mother on Christmas Day.

“It’s just such a tragedy; no child should die before their mother,” Barber expressed.
