Dr. Kimberley Kosari has been given a six-week suspension, a public reprimand, and other measures following a ruling by the College of Veterinarians of Ontario.

A veterinarian from the Barrie area has had her license suspended for six weeks after the discipline committee at the College of Veterinarians of Ontario found her guilty of professional misconduct.

Dr. Kimberley Kosari, who is licensed to practice in Ontario, faced suspension during a hearing on September 28. She was cited for not meeting minimum standards for veterinary facilities; failing to uphold the profession’s standard practices; not keeping required records; and committing acts that would be deemed “disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional” by her peers.

Barrie Today reached out to Kosari for her comments but did not receive any response.

As part of the college’s ruling, Kosari admitted to the facts outlined and acknowledged that her actions were considered professional misconduct.

The ruling indicated that in January 2019, she was tasked with spaying a cat and providing vaccinations. She picked up the cat from its owner’s home to carry out the procedure.

The decision pointed out that Kosari failed to inform the cat’s owner about where the surgery would be performed. It also noted that she didn’t inform them that she had not removed the cat’s right ovary and uterine horn during surgery.

A few months later, when the cat showed “abnormal symptoms,” its owner reached out to Kosari with concerns. She suggested that it could be in heat due to an ovarian remnant and recommended exploratory surgery.

The cat’s owner sought another opinion. The second veterinarian performed an exploratory laparotomy and informed them that both the right ovary and ovarian horn were still there before removing them.

The ruling stated that Kosari had no record or memory of where she conducted the surgery. None of the accredited facilities associated with her had any record either.

Moreover, she failed to keep any records related to this surgery. During discussions with the discipline committee, she mentioned storing her veterinary records in a box in her basement which was destroyed by flooding in 2022.

Kosari apologized to the cat’s owner for not removing both parts and reimbursed them $1,041 for both surgeries along with an ultrasound fee.

In addition to having her license suspended, Kosari received a public reprimand; is required to complete certain education, mentorships, and assessments; take part in up to three peer record reviews; and pay $5,000 in costs within 90 days as mandated by the College of Veterinarians.
