It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Frank John Esson’s passing. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he unexpectedly left us on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Barbara, three children Tara (Jamie), Sean (Zoee), and Patrick (Amanda), along with his five grandchildren Reighlan, Emerson, Oliver, Lochlan, and Rowan.

Born on February 20th, 1940, Frank was raised in Castletownbere, Ireland alongside his mother and two sisters, Margaret and Eileen. In his late teens, he attended a private Jesuit college on scholarship with dreams of becoming a priest. However, in 1963 he decided to leave Ireland for Canada before completing the program.

Frank began his teaching career in British Columbia and moved to Ontario in 1966 to continue pursuing this path. His dedication quickly earned him promotions; by 1968 he was appointed principal at Monsignor Lee Catholic School in Orillia. He later became principal at St. Charles in Bradford before finishing his career at St. Mary’s in Barrie upon retirement. Students and parents alike loved him for the impact he had; many former students would often approach him years later to express their gratitude for the guidance he provided during their schooling.

During his time in Orillia, Frank met the love of his life Barbara and they married during the summer of 1975. They shared a passion for travel that took them to incredible places like Egypt, Hawaii, and New Zealand during many summers together creating memories that will last forever. In 1981 they settled down in Bradford to start their family but Frank’s love for travel remained strong; he even took a year off work to explore Europe with them while making lasting memories.

A gifted storyteller at heart, Frank had an abundance of life experiences which gave him countless tales from both youth and adulthood – stories that not many could share.

After retiring, Frank dedicated himself to running which led him to represent Canada at the World Masters in Finland competing in the 5K event. He loved showing off his “shiny medals” to inspire his grandkids to strive for excellence themselves.

His grandchildren fondly called him “Poppy,” enjoying countless hours playing sports with him or building forts outdoors as well as racing each other around the yard or having fun with board games. They adored spending time with him and would eagerly run over just to play.

Frank has left an enduring impact on so many throughout the years. His absence will be felt deeply by family and friends but he’ll always be cherished and remembered fondly.

In line with Frank’s wishes there will be no funeral service; instead a private gathering will take place among close family members celebrating his life.

If you wish to make memorial donations please consider The Sharing Place Food Bank in Orillia through Simcoe Funeral Home located at 38 James Street E Orillia (705) 327-0221.
