The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have confirmed the identity of a man who was found deceased in a wooded area close to Highway 6 in Haldimand County.

In a news release on Thursday, authorities announced that Robert Sykes, 49, from Simcoe, was identified following a post-mortem examination conducted on October 17 at the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OFPS).

According to police, human remains were discovered in the vicinity west of Caledonia and south of Stirling Street around 6 p. m. on October 16.

The post-mortem also “determined the cause of death to be homicide,” police stated.

Authorities had previously indicated that they believed this body discovery was connected to an investigation in Simcoe, which resulted in one man being charged with murdering his mother.

Around 10:30 a. m. on October 5, provincial police responded to a 9-1-1 call at a residence on Head Street South where they located the body of a 71-year-old woman.

This woman was later identified as Barbara Morgan from Simcoe, and her post-mortem examination revealed that she died due to homicide.

Morgan’s son, aged 45 and also residing in Simcoe, was arrested on October 10 and charged with second-degree murder.

On October 10, police reported searching a home on Stanley Street in Simcoe while expressing concerns for Sykes’s safety. He had been unaccounted for since he was last seen on Head Street South on October 4.

The Norfolk County OPP Crime Unit is continuing its investigation under the guidance of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, working alongside OFPS.
