It is with deep sorrow that we share the news of Dr. Joseph Frances Joanes (Frank) passing away on December 5th, 2025 at Roseview Manor, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on November 6th, 1936 in Nairobi, Kenya, Frances was the second youngest of six siblings. From a young age, he excelled academically and completed his “O” level exams at the well-known Dr. Ribeiro Goan School in Nairobi as a top student in the class of 1954. In 1955, Francis achieved an outstanding MCAT score for a South Asian and became one of the first students of South Asian descent to receive a bursary to study medicine at University of Ireland, Galway Campus. He later continued his studies in Liverpool where he specialized in Gastroenterology. While in England, he witnessed Roger Bannister break the four-minute mile!
A chance outing with his friend Alfred Fernandez led him to meet Francie Glynn, who became the love of his life; they tied the knot on October 9th, 1965. David was born while they were in Galway before moving to Canada in 1968. Francis pursued further training at Mc Gill University in Montreal before relocating to Ottawa and finally settling down in Thunder Bay (Port Arthur) in 1969. There he established his practice at the Port Arthur Clinic, and Paul was born in 1972.
Francis quickly grew fond of Northern Ontario and took up skiing and cross-country skiing before discovering his true passion: golf. He eventually owned a camp on Dog Lake where many wonderful family memories were created.
From 1969 until 2016, Francis dedicated himself to serving the Thunder Bay District and played a key role in establishing the endoscopy unit. He was recognized for his compassion towards patients and went above and beyond to ensure quality care. Francis often spoke highly of his wonderful colleagues at the clinic, many of whom became dear friends over time. He always expressed gratitude toward the nurses who were essential partners in delivering exceptional care.
He is preceded by Francie-the love of his life-along with his parents Rosa and Rosario Joanes, and siblings Claudina, Netta, Louisa, and Joseph.
Francis leaves behind two sons: David and Paul; daughter-in-law Patricia Joanes who provided him with immense care during his final years; brother Jacob; Francie’s family members Maura and Tom; Drs. Tommie and Martin Glynn along with their families; as well as relatives from Ontario connected to his late siblings; not to mention two beloved pets PJ and Luna.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all staff members at Manor House along with every PSW from Paramed, Meals on Wheels personnel, Drs. Scali and Thacker; Monika Doran; plus nurses and support workers from Roseview who cared for him during those last days. Special thanks also go out to neighbors from Sunset Bay who looked after Francis attentively through their thoughtful acts.
A funeral service celebrating Frank’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 24th at 2:00 p. m., taking place at Corpus Christi Church followed by a reception at Sargent & Sons Funeral Home. Those wishing may make memorial donations to Northwestern Ontario School of Medicine. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel located at 21 N Court Street.
