Just a month and a half earlier, the CSA ended Spire Global Canada’s $72 million contract to create the Wild Fire Sat satellite network “for convenience.” The abrupt cancellation of such an essential project-aimed at monitoring Canadian wildfires by 2029-raised immediate concerns across the industry. Only days before this meeting, President Campbell spoke at the Space Canada Horizons conference about plans for a program reset along with a more flexible procurement strategy. This reset leaves many questions unanswered. Yet, during this briefing, the Standing Committee on Science and Research didn’t ask anything about it. Instead, they chose to pursue other stories. As another wildfire season starts up again, this was an opportunity for committee members to question those responsible for managing this major program who are now changing its direction without clarity as to why. The CSA claims there won’t be delays or extra costs involved. Parliamentarians and Canadians deserve clarity on these matters.
