Spencer mentions that community members in Tillsonburg encouraged her to pursue a spot on the Council. She aims to contribute her positive attitude and creativity, but above all, she wants to listen.
TILLSONBURG – A local business owner is stepping up to become a councillor.
Kelly Spencer runs the Indigo Lounge and Wellness Centre and has called Tillsonburg home for 45 years. She’s been actively involved in the community since she was young.
Growing up, Spencer’s parents taught her that volunteering and engaging in local activities are key to being a good community member, starting with her involvement in Meals on Wheels as a child. Since then, she’s volunteered with several charities and participated in numerous local events, including Big Brothers Big Sisters for more than 15 years, and initiating “Choose Kindness Day” in Tillsonburg back in 2014.
Spencer says she felt encouraged by people from the Tillsonburg community to run for Council. She hopes to bring her positive attitude and creativity into discussions, but most importantly, she plans to listen closely.
“I think when you run for [Council], you can come with your own agenda and I think that’s great to have things you’re passionate about, but I also think it’s really important to listen to what’s important to everyone else.”
Spencer shares that she has talked with hundreds of people around town about their concerns, particularly regarding housing and homelessness. While she appreciates the recent developments happening in town, she believes there needs to be more affordable housing options available.
“I have heard of a family that had jobs up until the pandemic and lost them… and now they are on the streets.”
In closing, Spencer highlighted the lack of healthcare services keeping pace with the town’s growth. She feels Tillsonburg could benefit from having its own clinic.
“We have a walk-in clinic that’s open for a few hours, but people are having to go outside of town to find a doctor because everyone is full. Even dentistry and vision help are six-month waiting lists.”
The municipal election is just over a month away, on October 24.
