[ad_1]342Very few people have had such a significant influence on the Olympic movement in India and Asia as Raja Randhir Singh. His impact went well beyond just the shooting range, playing a vital role in the advancement of sports administration throughout the continent and contributing to some of India’s most notable international sports achievements. The late Herb Dhaliwal, one of the first three Members of Parliament of Indian descent elected to Canada’s House of Commons and later the first Punjabi Cabinet Minister in Canada, once shared an insightful encounter with Raja Randhir Singh. Dhaliwal, who chaired Canada’s bid committee for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, recalled meeting Raja Randhir Singh during an International Olympic Committee event while promoting Vancouver’s bid to host the Games. “At the venue of the meeting, I spotted a sharp-looking Sikh wearing a lovely Patiala Shahi turban. I approached him and introduced myself as a representative from the Canadian Olympic Committee. He greeted me with a smile and mentioned that he was the Secretary-General of both the Olympic Council of Asia and the Indian Olympic Association,” Herb Dhaliwal remembered. “After exchanging pleasantries, I brought up our need for support regarding hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.” “I explained that since Canada was among strong contenders, it required votes and backing from Asia to secure its bid. (Korea was also competing for 2010 and eventually hosted the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeong Chang.) Raja Randhir Singh promptly promised his support for our bid. Ultimately, Canada won by just one vote that we hoped came from him,” Dhaliwal stated. This story illustrates how much respect and influence Raja Randhir Singh held within international sporting communities. Throughout his career, he remained deeply involved with the Olympic movement both in India and across Asia. The Vancouver and Whistler Winter Olympics in 2010 became one of history's most successful editions of these games, bringing together about 2,600 athletes from 82 nations who competed in 86 events across 15 disciplines. Raja Randhir Singh represented another generation from a family that played a crucial role in promoting organized sports and advancing the Olympic movement in India. His grandfather Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, uncle Maharaja Yadavinder Singh, and father Raja Bhalendra Singh each made significant contributions to growing Olympic sports within India. The involvement of Patiala's royal family in supporting the Olympic movement before and after India's independence is unmatched. Their efforts laid essential groundwork for modern sports administration within India. Durring India's hosting of the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, Raja Bhalendra Singh headed up what was then known as Asian Games Federation (now called Olympic Council of Asia). Years later, Raja Randhir Singh continued this legacy by serving as President of this council while overseeing operations during the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. The news about his passing following an extended illness resonated throughout Asian sports circles just months before Japan would host its own version at their upcoming Asian Games set for 2026.
