Paul Donovan, a beloved teacher, coach, and family man, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025, at his home in Canton, at the age of 80.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and devoted wife of 57 years, Joanne. He also leaves behind a son, Paul Donovan Jr. and his wife Colleen from Long Island, and a daughter, Christine Sexton and her husband Dan from Foxboro. Paul was a proud Grampy to Paul Donovan III, Maeve Donovan, Kevin Sexton, Timothy Sexton, and Nora Sexton. His love and guidance will continue to inspire them.
Born in Boston on April 13, 1945 to the late James and Frances Donovan, Paul was one of seven siblings. He is survived by his brother Bob Donovan of Virginia; Nancy Crane of New Hampshire; Janet Cleary of Tewksbury; Mary Ellen Carter of Marshfield; along with his sister-in-law Jane Bradley of Norwood. He was predeceased by brothers Jay from Oklahoma and Dick from Marshfield.
Although he grew up mainly in Mattapan, Paul attended Christopher Columbus High School in the North End so that his policeman father could keep an eye on him and his brothers. After graduating from Boston State College in 1966, he went on to earn a Master’s degree in mathematics from the University of New Hampshire.
Paul started as a math teacher at Old Rochester Regional High School but moved to Blue Hills Regional Technical High School in Canton in 1967. There he taught and coached for 35 years before becoming head of the math department and the varsity boys basketball coach. Many students remember him shouting “Box Out!” and “Get Back!” during games at Blue Hills. He finished his teaching career at Archbishop Williams before retiring in 2009.
Outside work hours, Paul loved spending time with family and friends while visiting Maine or Cape Cod-two favorite spots for him. His love for the ocean began as a child when he spent summers at the family cottage in Marshfield. Even into his 70s, he would take a swim just to “cool off,” no matter how cold it was or what he wore! He became an enthusiastic golfer and had great passion for sports-especially cheering on the Patriots and Celtics.
Paul’s impact will always be remembered through kindness, generosity, dedication to others’ success , and integrity. His gentle guidance will be sorely missed by everyone lucky enough to know him. We find comfort knowing that his spirit will stay alive within us all.
Visiting hours will be held at Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home located at 455 Washington St., Canton on Monday November 17th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home Tuesday morning November 18th at 11:00 am followed by burial at Knollwood Memorial Park , Canton.
