Ontario’s police oversight agency is looking into an incident where a man got seriously hurt after falling from a second floor landing while being chased by Ottawa police.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) started its probe after Ottawa police reported they were called about an “unknown person” who entered a commercial establishment in the By Ward Market area just before 3:30 a. m. Saturday.
Upon arrival, the 32-year-old man took off running, prompting officers to pursue him on foot, according to the SIU.
The man ended up in a parking garage at 30 York Street, where he fell from the second-floor landing down to the ground below, as noted by the SIU.
Ottawa paramedics mentioned that the man suffered “pretty significant trauma” and life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
The SIU stated it has assigned three investigators to look into this case.
The SIU investigates incidents involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
