On April 22, 2026, Kingston police teamed up with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to carry out a safety operation targeting commercial vehicles operating within the City of Kingston.

During this effort, officers and MTO enforcement staff inspected 33 commercial motor vehicles to make sure that the vehicles on local roads are safe and meet provincial regulations. These inspections are part of ongoing initiatives aimed at promoting road safety and lowering the chances of accidents due to mechanical failures or poorly maintained vehicles. As a result of these checks, 20 charges were filed, and 13 vehicles were taken out of service for safety issues.

The inspections focused on critical areas such as:

· Mechanical fitness (example: braking systems, suspensions, frames)

· Load security

· Driver compliance

· Equipment standards (example: lights, wipers, seatbelts)

These inspections play a vital role in spotting safety problems before they can lead to serious incidents on the road.

“These are very large vehicles that share our roadways with us… It’s very important we have our commercial motor vehicle inspectors here to check the vehicles thoroughly, and make sure that if there are any safety issues, [the vehicles] are pulled off the road.” – Constable Cameron Mack, Traffic Safety Unit at Kingston police.

Kingston Police Service will keep working with partner agencies on enforcement efforts aimed at enhancing safety and compliance across Kingston roadways.
