New Ontario Law Allows More Retail Stores to Open on Monday

On Monday, various places will be closed such as government offices, some arenas and community centres, banks, and schools. On the other hand, retail stores may remain open thanks to changes made by the Ontario government to the Retail Business Holidays Act in April. (Kate Bueckert/CBC)
This Victoria Day long weekend means that several businesses and offices will close on Monday.
Most government offices, banks, and both elementary and high schools will not be open.
Retail businesses will see a slight change as the Ontario government updated the Retail Business Holidays Act in April allowing more options for opening on Victoria Day.
You can find Conestoga Mall in Waterloo, Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener, Cambridge Centre and Stone Road Mall in Guelph open on Monday.
Some locations of The Beer Store will also operate along with LCBO being open on Monday.
No changes are expected for garbage collection or green bin services; however, transfer stations where residents drop off waste in Cambridge and Waterloo will be closed.
Grand River Transit will run a holiday service schedule. Mobility Plus is available but users must book ahead by calling 519-744-2241 even if they have subscription trips.
Region of Waterloo
The Service First Contact Centre is available around-the-clock. All regional administrative offices (99 Regina St. S. in Waterloo, 150 Frederick St. in Kitchener, 150 Main St. in Cambridge; airport administrative; home child care offices) will be closed. Flights at Region of Waterloo International Airport continue as normal. All branches of Region of Waterloo Libraries will not be operating. Administration for Sunnyside Seniors’ Services is also closed. The Sunnyside Wellness Centre is not open. Community Alzheimer day programs located in Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo are shut down while overnight stay services are available. Welcome Spaces at 99 Regina St. S. in Waterloo; 20 Weber St. E. in Kitchener; and 150 Main St. in Cambridge will all be closed. The Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum located in Kitchener is welcoming visitors from 11 a. m. to 4 p. m.Schneider Haus National Historic Site situated in Kitchener opens its doors from 11 a. m. to 4 p. m.
Mc Dougall Cottage Historic Site found in Cambridge welcomes guests from noon until 4 p. m.
Cambridge
The city hall along with all administrative offices are not open. All branches of the Cambridge Public Library are unavailable. All arenas have been closed. David Durward Centre along with William E. Pautler Centre and Allan Reuter Centre are shut down. W. G Johnson Centre/Ted Wake Centre along with John Dolson Centre remains operational. Cambridge Centre for the Arts is currently not open.Kitchener
Kitchener city hall operates from 9 a. m. until 9 p. m., but no services are available face-to-face. All branches of Kitchener Public Library are currently closed. Activa Sportsplex is functioning normally as the walking track opens from 8 a. m. to8 p. m., along with public skating scheduled between3:30 p. m. and4:35 p. m. Forest Heights Pool offers toonie swims during two time slots: from11a. m. to12:30 p. m. and1 p. m. to2:30 p. m. All community centres alongside community arenas remain closed. Breithaupt Centre has been shut down while Grand River Recreation Complex does not operate. Cameron Heights Pool remains unavailable. Kitchener Marketand Food Hallare alsoclosed.Waterloo
The city hall of Waterloo which includes tenant offices plus businesses stays shut. Public washrooms operate between8a. m. and10 p. m. Waterloo Public Library branches won’t welcome visitors. Community centres like Albert Mc Cormick; Bechtel Park Manulife Soccer plus Sports Centre; and Moses Springerremain unoperational. RIM Park Manulife Sportsplex alongside Healthy Living Centre has been shut down.
