This weekend, Gananoque’s official town crier will represent the community at the Ontario Town Crier Championships in Ottawa.

Brian Mabee, who also holds a position as a councillor with the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands, is one of the participants in this provincial event that includes various themed public cries and celebrations.

Mabee mentioned that one of his main presentations during the championships will focus on sharing the history of Gananoque and the Thousand Islands while presenting commemorative gifts from Mayor John Beddows and the local visitors’ centre.

“Presenting some memorabilia of the Thousand Islands and the Town of Gananoque,” Mabee said.

The championships feature three competitions scheduled throughout the weekend, including a Hometown Cry, a Bytowne Cry, and a Tulip Cry.

Mabee explained that this gathering is more than just about competition; it’s an opportunity for town criers from all over Ontario to come together to celebrate their tradition and connect with each other.

The annual championships bring together criers from various communities across the province, showcasing local history, heritage, and civic pride through this time-honored ceremonial role.

His involvement also offers a chance to promote Gananoque and the Thousand Islands region to both visitors and fellow participants from all around Ontario.
