The Dean of Engineering at the University of Waterloo, along with hockey figure Don Cherry and tech leader Edward Rogers, is among 30 new recipients of the Order of Ontario.

Lt.-Gov. Edith Dumont has shared the 2025 appointments, which also include trade union chief Joe Mancinelli from the Labourers’ International Union of North America and former U. S. ambassador David Mac Naughton.

Dumont mentions that these appointees have made a “profound contribution” to the lives of Ontarians and represent the best in the province.

Mary Wells, a well-known name in the Waterloo Region community, is recognized for her work in sustainable manufacturing and has played a role in shaping aerospace and automotive sectors globally.

She serves as a “champion for equity” in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. She co-founded initiatives aimed at increasing female enrollment at the university.

Appointments are made based on recommendations from an independent advisory board.

Since its inception in 1986, more than 900 individuals have been appointed to the Order of Ontario.
