You don’t have to venture far from the GTA to discover one of Canada’s most sought-after living spots. This delightful little town near Toronto, famous for its picturesque streets and lovely harbor views, has been recognized as one of the best places in the country to live.
We asked our followers on Narcity Canada’s Facebook page to recommend their favorite small towns in Canada, and this lakeside treasure in Ontario came highly recommended.
Just under an hour from Toronto, Oakville is a waterfront getaway that offers a friendly vibe and beautiful views.
As noted by Visit Oakville, the town features “picturesque harbours, vibrant shopping districts, active arts community and some of the best dining options in the Greater Toronto Area.”
The downtown area of Oakville is filled with charming shops and boutiques offering everything from clothing to home decor and jewelry, making it convenient for a shopping day without having to travel into Toronto. The locale also provides ample entertainment opportunities like a drive-in theatre, museums, festivals, and galleries.
If you love being outdoors, you’ll find over 3,200 acres of parks and green spaces equipped with trails, pools, and recreational areas. You can take sunset strolls or enjoy picnics along the waterfront while spending summer days at Coronation Park or Bronte Beach Park.
In wintertime, you can explore snowy paths at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, skate at local ice rinks, and take part in Visit Oakville’s Taste of Oakville event that features prix fixe menus from restaurants around town.
With more than 200 dining options available in Oakville, food lovers will be pleased. Whether you’re looking for brunch spots with stunning views or cozy cafes with waterfront patios ideal for relaxing meals-there’s something for everyone here.
This town is also great for commuters because it’s easy to access VIA Rail and GO Transit services.
However, keep in mind that living in Oakville may come at a premium. According to RE/MAX data, the cost of living “tends to be slightly higher than other areas in Ontario,” while Zolo reports that as of January 2026 the median home price was about $1,381,057.
Still, those looking for a new place often regard Oakville as one of Canada’s finest small towns for settling down.
