Gerald Patrick Murphy from Oyster Bed Bridge, Prince Edward Island, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026. He was born on June 26, 1956, in Holyrood, Newfoundland and Labrador, and was the loving son of Angela and John Murphy. Gerry lived a life filled with kindness, strength, gentle humor, and deep commitment to his family, friends, and community. In recent years, he faced serious health issues with great bravery and grace, always sharing a smile and a friendly chat even during tough times.
A proud soccer player and graduate of the University of New Brunswick, Gerry later obtained his Master’s in Guidance Counselling. He devoted his career to helping young people. He made a lasting difference for students in Churchill Falls and Fort Mc Murray while spending 19 years with the Fort Mc Murray Catholic School Division before retiring in 2010. He was known for being a calm presence who offered thoughtful advice and genuine care.
Gerry had a lifelong love for sports. He excelled at badminton, enjoyed skiing, and was an enthusiastic volleyball coach. A dedicated fan of Manchester United F. C. and Raiders football, he rarely missed a game. Watching matches with friends at the Blackhorse brought him joy; the friendships mattered just as much as the games themselves. Gerry also served proudly as an auxiliary police officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police-a role he found very fulfilling.
Together with Golda, Gerry created a wonderful life in Fort Mc Murray before returning to Prince Edward Island after retirement. They loved traveling often as snowbirds-especially to Portugal-where Gerry felt at home. Although they were based on the East Coast, they frequently visited out West to enjoy time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Gerry took pride in guiding his granddaughters toward careers in human services and had special admiration for his daughter Lindsey whom he affectionately called his “mini-me.” He respected her strength; her caring nature; and her commitment to sharing Newfoundland culture.
Family was everything to Gerry. He shared close ties with his extended family-the Henstridges-and valued friendships built in Wheatley River where he was fondly nicknamed “the mayor.” He had an incredible knack for connecting with people-starting conversations wherever he went-and making others feel truly appreciated and important. His kindness along with attentive listening left a memorable impact on everyone who crossed his path.
Gerry leaves behind his devoted wife of 32 years Golda; daughter Lindsey Murphy; stepchildren Tonya Fox (Russell) and Jamie Fox (Danette); grandchildren Hannah (Kyle), Kelti (Max), Jaxon, Ryder; great-grandchildren Lincoln and Lily Scott; as well as siblings Betsy Mc Glashan (Brian), Sally Turcotte (Michael), Catherine “Kitty” Murphy (Charles), Peggy Brown (Ted), Michael Murphy (Kim), Paul Murphy; along with beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents Angela and John Murphy alongside siblings Kevin Murphy, John Murphy, Helen Murphy.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date. The family asks that donations be made to a cancer charity in Gerry’s memory instead of flowers.
Though deeply missed by all who knew him, Gerry’s love, courage, and gentle spirit will remain alive in our hearts forever.
