THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The opening of bike lanes in Thunder Bay has been postponed as city crews carry on with spring street sweeping after a long stretch of snowfall and rainy weather.

The City of Thunder Bay mentions that bike lanes typically open in early May once the sweeping is done, but winter sand and debris are still present on some streets and designated cycling paths.

Ongoing Street Sweeping Before Bike Lanes Open

The city states that crews will keep working to clear the streets and bike lanes until they can officially open for the season.

An update will be provided when the lanes are cleared and ready for cyclists.

After sweeping is complete and bike lanes are open, parking restrictions affecting designated bike lanes will be enforced.

Drivers Asked to Look Out for Cyclists

Even though the official opening has been pushed back, warmer temperatures are bringing more cyclists out onto Thunder Bay’s roads.

Drivers are reminded to slow down, move over when it’s safe, and share the road with cyclists. Spring conditions can create extra hazards for bikers, including sand, gravel, potholes, and wet pavement near curbs and intersections.

A Component of Thunder Bay’s Active Transportation Network

Bike lanes are part of Thunder Bay’s active transportation network designed to provide safer travel options for cyclists and pedestrians while encouraging healthier and more connected communities.

The city explains that active transportation can enhance personal health and wellness, cut down greenhouse gas emissions, and lower household travel expenses.

For residents in Thunder Bay, bike lanes also serve a practical purpose by linking neighborhoods to schools, workplaces, parks, waterfront areas, and local businesses during warmer months.

Where to Get More Details

You can find more information about Thunder Bay’s active transportation network along with details about the Bike Racks for Business program at thunderbay. ca/activetransportation.

If residents have questions regarding street sweeping in their area, they can contact City Dispatch at 807-625-2195.
