HUNTER, Dr. Charles Gilbert –
Gib Hunter passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 after bravely fighting cancer. He was in his 83rd year. He was a loving husband to Betty Jane for 56 years. He leaves behind his children Rory and Livia, Kim and Mike Newediuk, and Kent and Bonnie. His grandchildren Cassie, Cal, Bronwen, Harrison, Nicole, Tom, Lara, Henry and Regan will miss him dearly. He is also survived by his brothers Bill and Nancy and John and Beth. Additionally, he was a dear brother-in-law to Harry Rath and Barbara. Gib was an uncle to Kingsley, Megan, Scott, Shari, the late Shawn and their families. A graduate of the University of Toronto Dentistry in 1957, he practiced for 43 years; spending two years in Willowdale before moving on to Markham for the next 41 years. In 1986 he welcomed his son Rory into the practice. Gib’s greatest joy came from his family. In 1994 he received a liver transplant due to a Klatskins tumour but defied all odds by living another 22 vibrant years filled with downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, tennis, golfing, curling and countless trail bike rides. Gib and B. J. loved sharing their enthusiasm for family activities with their kids and grandkids creating a close-knit family that enjoyed being together. Visitation will take place at NEWEDIUK FUNERAL HOME KIPLING CHAPEL located at 2058 Kipling Avenue (North of Rexdale Blvd.) on Saturday February 20th from 2pm to 6pm as well as at FAWCETT FUNERAL HOME located at 82 Pine Street in Collingwood on Sunday February 21st from 6pm to 9pm. The funeral service will be held on Monday February 22nd from Trinity United Church at140 Maple Street Collingwood starting at11am followed by interment at Trinity United Cemetery. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the UHN Liver transplant team along with the Princess Margaret Cancer Care team including Dr. David Lowe as well as Community Care Access Centre staff and Saint Elizabeth Home Health Care workers for their support during this time.
